In 1992, Amanda Bossard began her study of marine biology in Anchorage from Alaska Pacific University. Bossard started her journey working in the commercial seafood sector in 1999. In that year she worked on Murat Aritan's halibut 65 feet boat, which was later converted into a fish tender. Bossard and Aritan have been married since 1993 and have joined forces to stake their claim to their business. They support conservative, profitable management of sustainable seafood resources. Otolith is an independent wholesale distributor of seafood founded within Philadelphia in 2007 by a woman who is now the mother of two children, Bella age 3 and Andre aged 1. Its name is an affectionate recall of her extensive fish biology knowledge and her husband's extensive involvement in the seafood industry often keeping them from each other for 5 months or longer while they focus on the environment and financial goals that show their independence as well as commitment to their community wherever they live. Bossard and her children Andre 10, and Isabella 12 make their annual return in Southeast Alaska as deckhands to catch wild salmon in summer. A small 42-salmon trolling vessel using hooks and lines for catching their desired salmon, they are joined by Aritan for two months selling to local processors and continuing to expand their direct-market seafood products sold through Otolith Sustainable Seafood by way of purchasing the custom processing services of small processors in order to produce unique wild-caught seafood that reflects their passion for quality as well as environmental sustainability.
